MANILA, Philippines – The hometown heroes gave the crowd a night to remember.
Led by Team Lakay's skipper, Eduard Folayang, along with stablemates Kevin Belingon and Honorio Banario scored convincing victories in ONE Championship's "Kings of Destiny" showpiece at MOA Arena on Friday.
Folayang's challenger, Malaysian Ev Ting, took the fight to the fifth round but after a sturdy showing by, it was clear that the champion was sturdier fighter.
"[Ting] really prepared for this fight. He was right that we'll give a good show," Folayang told the crowd after retaining his belt via unanimous decision.
Folayang, early on, repeatedly tried to catch his foe with his signature spinning back fist. Although he was only able to hit Ting on the payoff round. It was also in the final salvo where he empathically took down the youngster.
"The last time I was, here I slept on the mat. But you know, I need to rise up. So this is it. This is for the loss two years ago. I did this all for you," he added.
Before the main event, contenders Banario and Belingon both scored convincing victories.
The former champion Banario viciously knocked out his Czech opponent Jaroslav Jartim with a left.
Belingon, for his part, bloddied and made quick work of Finnish Toni Tauru.
In the earlier matches, Danny Kingad's electric showing was also a sight to behold.
The Team Lakay youngster hiked his record to five unbeaten fights after turning the tables on Malaysian Muhammad Aiman.
Eugene Toquero, another Filipino in the card, bowed to Indonesian Stefer Rahardian via unanimous decision.
Singaporean Christian Lee scored a convincing win off a referee stoppage after pummeling his Chinese foe Wan Jian Ping with elbows. The latter's compatriot Xie Bin, though, was able to snare a victory at the expense of Cambodian Chan Rothana.
Team Lakay went on to finish the night with a 5-0 card.
