ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two minors were reportedly in a crossfire of a clash between the military and the Abu Sayyaf in an island town off Sulu, according to police authorities.
Police learned of the incident Sunday after they were alerted that gunshot victims were admitted to West Metro Medical Center in Zamboanga City on Friday night.
The victims were from of Barangay Bangalao, Banguingui — formerly Tongkil municipality — of Sulu.
Police said based on the accounts of the victims’ sister Saima Sabtula, they were sleeping inside their house when a firefight erupted about 4:30 a.m. last Tuesday.
Sabtula said two of her siblings were accidentally hit in the crossfire.
The victims and their family arrived in the city aboard a motorized boat and the victims were admitted to a hospital Friday night.
President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday told the military to be wary of collateral damage and to avoid civilian casualties while in the course of pursuing the Abu Sayyaf and other militant groups in Mindanao.
Two civilians were also killed and another was wounded during an operation against the Abu Sayyaf group in Tabuan Lasa, Basilan on March 10.
The Western Mindanao Command has apologized and extended assistance to the victims. It is yet unclear which side hit the victims.
