No classes in Quezon City on July 24 for SONA
MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government on Monday announced the cancelation of classes there on Monday, July 24, in view of President Rodrigo Duterte's second State of the Nation Address.
Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista ordered the suspension of classes in all levels.
Duterte will deliver his second State of the Nation Address during a joint session of Congress at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City. As mandated in the 1987 Constitution, SONAs are held every fourth Monday of July.
National Capital Region Police Office chief Oscar Albayalde earlier said protesters will be allowed to enter up to the South Gate of Batasan Complex during the SONA. In past administrations, police put up barricades and only allowed protests on a portion of Commonwealth Avenue.
A no-fly zone, which includes drones, will also be in effect during the SONA, Albayalde said.
Heavy security is expected for the national event, which is also a joint session of Congress. There will be about 6,000 police officers designated to secure Duterte’s SONA.
