LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — Members of the Maute terror group shot dead two Army intelligence operatives and wounded another in a gunfight in Marawi City Thursday.
Maj. Jericho Mangalus and Cpl. Bryan Libot both died from multiple gunshot wounds when they were attacked by jihadists while on a covert mission in Barangay Lilod-Madaya in Marawi City. They both belong to the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Sgt. Rolando Cartilla was wounded in the shootout and now being treated at a hospital.
The Lanao del Sur provincial police office, in an initial report to the Regional Police Office-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in Parang town in Maguindanao, said Mangalus and his companions were in Marawi City for a clandestine intelligence operation.
Local police investigators said the victims were on board a light grey Isuzu Crosswind maneuvering through a street in Barangay Lilod Madaya when gunmen opened fire at their vehicle.
Marawi City is the capital of Lanao del Sur, where groups boasting loyalty to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have emerged recently.
The city is more than an hour away by land to Butig town, where the Maute terror group, also known as the Dawlah Islamiya, first emerged and established a “shadow government” that enforced a ruthless Taliban-style justice system on local communities.
The Maute group, founded by siblings Omar and Abdullah Maute, uses the black ISIS flag as its revolutionary banner.
