You wouldn’t be able to tell just by looking at model Rissa Trillo and personal care executive Jacqe Gutierrez that they are both long-time experts in the beauty biz — proof that they truly know and apply their stuff. So when they joined forces and started Happy Skin with skin-loving line makeup, the brand — especially their super-pigmented moisturizing lippies Shut Up And Kiss Me — was an instant hit across demographics throughout the country. This summer marks their first foray into skincare, starting with suncare that addresses all the reasons why most Filipinas commit the mortal beauty sin and skip using it. For those whose excuses err on the side of fear of greasiness, here’s something that multi-tasks like you do: Catch The Sun On The Go Hydrating UV Mist SPF 35 PA ++ has pigmentation-busting niacinamide and moisture-locking hyaluronic acid for your skin healthy combined with makeup polymers to absorb oil and keep makeup in place. It’s also soothing to the touch, perfect for constant SPF retouching by the beach. In the city, I set my makeup with this.

Available in Glorietta 3; Greenbelt 5; Powerplant Mall; Robinson’s Magnolia; SM Megamall,  Mega Fashion Hall; Eastwood Mall; UP Town Center; TriNoma; SM Mall of Asia; Robinsons Place Manila, Midtown Wing; SM City Pampanga; SM City Cebu North Wing; SM City Clark; and SM City North Edsa. Happy Skin is also available inside Rustan’s Department Stores, SM Department Stores, Watsons, The Landmark, Beauty Bar and Plains & Prints nationwide.

VMV Hypoallergenics

When they say they are the safest, most proven effective care on the planet, they’re saying that with decades worth of footnotes citing published and awarded studies in medical journals and conventions. VMV Hypoallergenics is a pioneer in the skin-loving game worldwide founded by dermatologist/dermatopathologist, and dermatology/laser surgeon Vermén M. Verallo-Rowell in 1979. Their Armada sun protection line, fragrance-, paraben- and- preservative-free with an indoor-(extreme!) outdoor performance, notably the Sport 70 one, is at cult status. They just came out with a lip balm to round out the range, addressing not just the chapping but also the darkening of your precious puckers. For underarm pigmentation and excessive sweating, Illuminants+ Axillight: Treatment Antiperspirant saves the day with a lightening botanical complex, reparative antioxidant green tea, and maximum non-prescription concentration of aluminum chlorohydrate for ultra-control, all-day dryness.

Go bold or go nude — that’s the beauty attitude of the season. Founded in 2007 to fill the gap in the mineral makeup market, Ellana was made to suit Filipina skin undertones and preferences. Prim Botanicals

Academy Award-winning producer Stefanie Walmsley has another achievement under her belt: after spending nearly two years developing an oil to save her ultra-sensitive, highly reactive skin, she’s made some of the best natural beauty products around. Launched in 2015, Prim Botanicals may be based in New York — its fans include the beauty editors of Vogue and Allure and Malibu surf girls with enviable eternal summer hair — but it was raised in the Philippines, with star ingredients like Barako coffee, virgin coconut oil and Moringa. They are in The Debauchery Detox body scrub and The Hair Oil. Both instantly fixed my bumpy post-sun-damaged skin and rough tresses, but also made me feel amazing after, and it’s not just aromatherapy (which is great, too), but toxin-releasing salts and activated charcoal. The hair oil is a mix of coconut, camellia, moring, marula and black seed which I use as a hot oil treatment. I must say, the pretty packaging spruces up your bathroom countertop, too.

In the Philippines, Prim Botanicals is available in Lanai Manila, The Alley at Karrivin Plaza, Chino Roces Ave, Makati.

Radioactive Mushrooms in the Forest

There’s a dreamy quality to self-taught illustrator and tattoo artist Wiji Lacsamana’s work. She designs inspired by good vibrations and ethereal mermaid fantasies. So when she came out with a vegan and cruelty-free natural perfume line, it just made sense. When Radioactive Mushrooms in the Forest evolved with poetically moonlit skin-inspired luminizers and sun kissed skin-inspired pigments aptly named Sans Soleil, it just rounds up her vision of using our bodies as canvas to self-expression and manifestation beyond the sense of sight. Her latest release, a perfumed oil and skin luminizer in one leaves goddess-worthy golden flecks. When you close your eyes, it’s a trail of hypnotizing florals increasing in sillage as your body heats up.
