Cignal, Sta. Lucia try to boost bid minus stars
MANILA, Philippines — Cignal HD and Sta. Lucia clash today in a duel of struggling teams out to recover from a spate of injuries to key players in the Chooks-to-Go Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Jovelyn Gonzaga suffered a right knee muscle strain late in the second set in the HD Spikers’ 22-25, 13-25, 12-25 loss to the unbeaten F2 Logistics Cargo Movers Tuesday night with the veteran spiker likely to miss their last two matches in the elims.
They include their 7 p.m. showdown with the Lady Realtors, who will also miss Canada national team member Marisa Field, out for two weeks after sustaining a minor knee injury against Victoria Sports-UST last Nov. 14.
“She (Gonzaga) is fine. No surgery. Just one to two weeks of rest and recovery,” said Cignal HD coach George Pascua, whose squad reeled to its fourth loss in six outings for sixth spot.
Meanwhile, newcomer Iriga City and guest team UST tangle at 4:15 p.m. in a duel of struggling squads.
The Spikers, who just welcomed the return of Rachel Daquis after being sidelined due to a minor knee injury (swelling) three weeks ago, saw another key player in Gonzaga succumb to a right knee injury on an awkward landing after being foiled by American import Kennedy Bryan.
