Generals seek place at helm, face Knights
MANILA, Philippines - Emilio Aguinaldo College shoots for an early share of the lead with Lyceum as the Generals take on the Letran Knights today in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil Arena in San Juan City.
The Generals are coming into the 12 noon match brimming with confidence following their 74-64 trouncing of the St. Benilde Blazers last Friday while the Knights are reeling from a 75-78 setback to the Mapua Cardinals last week.
Cameroon’s Hamadou Laminou and skipper Sydney Onwubere hope to sustain their strong showing the first time out with the former finishing with 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks and the latter churning out 11 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, three steals and one shot block.
Onwubere said he’s motivated by his desire to steer the team to its first Final Four appearance in his final year with EAC.
“I will give it my best to help the team make the Final Four,” said Onwubere.
But the Knights are also out to rebound from their three-point defeat to their Muralla neighbors.
“It was a heartbreaking defeat but we’ve seen some positive things, which we hope to translate into better things for us,” said Letran mentor Jeff Napa.
Meanwhile, San Beda tries to recover from a shock defeat to Lyceum last week as it collides with St. Benilde at 2 p.m. while Arellano U and Jose Rizal collide at 4 p.m. in another heavy three-game seniors schedule with their corresponding juniors matches.
