Liverpool manager sees better Reds stint

HONG KONG – Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp sees brighter days ahead for the Reds in the Premier League, especially coming off what he described as a successful campaign last season.
Klopp, who came in mid-season in 2015-16, steered the Reds to a runner-up finish in the Football League Cup and qualification for the UEFA Champions League playoffs with their fourth-place standing on his first full season last year and looks forward to sustaining the momentum.
“We may have lost in the final but reaching the final is already a success. We (also) qualified for Champions League; we know we have to play the qualifiers but we should be confident that we can do it and that last season was a success (we can use a springboard for the next battles),” Klopp said during yesterday’s press con hosted by Standard Chartered Bank.
Asked for a time-table for making LFC champs again, Klopp said: “Hopefully, soon…I know the quality of the teams so we can’t say when. But it’s really not what I say but what we do during the season, and if we do really well and we improve the kind of play we did last year, which was already good in a lot of things, yes, there’s a chance.”
“We are really ambitious but also not naïve so we have to do it step by step, that’s the thing,” he added.
The next immediate step towards that goal is the pre-season Premier League Asia Trophy here, where Liverpool is pitted against Crystal Palace, Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion.
Klopp, who’s on his first-ever Asian trip, sat down with select media from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines to talk about his experiences with the Merseyside team.
He cracked jokes in a display of his humorous side while gamely answering queries, well at least those that he could (questions regarding transfers and recruitment had been prohibited beforehand by the Premier League).
The half-hour presser was arranged by Standard Chartered Bank, the club’s main sponsor.
“Standard Chartered Bank’s sponsorship of the Liverpool FC dates back 2010 and we are pleased at how it connects with our clients and football fans around the world. Liverpool FC is an iconic global brand with a long history and incredible following, a milestone we share with them,” said Mai Sangalang, SCB Philippines Head of Corporate Affairs/Brand and Marketing.
